Kentucky Overweight/Overdimensional Permits
Basic Regulations

On interstate and major highway systems there are no overall length restrictions, however, on these highways the trailer is limited to 53 feet in length by 8 feet 6 inches in width.

On all other state highways the legal dimensions for truck and trailer are 65 feet in length and 8 feet in width. Overall height is limited to 13 feet 6 inches on all highways. Legal gross weight for 5 or more axles is up to 80,000 lbs.

Carriers with nondivisible loads exceeding these dimensions are required to purchase an overweight/overdimensional permit.

RESTRICTIONS: There is no longer a "holiday" restriction in Kentucky unless it is a Superload or a House move.

All permitted loads are restricted to the following counties 7:00 am to 9:00 am or 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday: Boone, Campbell, Fayette, Jefferson and Kenton. No travel is allowed on the 431 bridge in Owensboro.

Travel in Kentucky is allowed 24-7 unless specified otherwise on permit. - DOES NOT APPLY FOR MOBILE HOMES Mobile homes are allowed daylight hours only Monday through Saturday with no travel permitted on Sunday. Effective March 18, 2005 due to HB 309.

NOTE: Super loads will take from 10 to 12 working days. Depending on routes, all loads weighing 200,000 lbs and up will be considered for a bridge analysis, loaded or empty. All trailers with trunion axles will automatically be submitted for bridge analysis. All loads 15' high & up requires a pole car escort.

What is a single trip permit?
A single trip Overweight/Overdimensional permit is a one time trip permit showing the origin and destination requested. It is vehicle, route, and load specific.
How much is a single trip permit?
The Kentucky fee for a trip permit in January 2012 was: $40.00
How long is a single trip permit valid for?
10 days.
How do I apply for a single trip permit?

How long will it take to get the permit?
Permits are available shortly after the application is submitted providing it is done during the Kentucky office business hours which are Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..

When is an escort required on a 2 lane road?
Over 75’ long a front is required
Over 10’6” wide a front is required
Over 85’ long a front and rear is required
Over 12’ wide a front and rear is required
When is an escort required on a 4 lane road?
Over 110’ long a rear is required
Over 12’ wide a rear is required
Over 14’ wide a front and rear is required
Over 16’ wide 2 front and 2 rear required
Over 120’ long a front and 2 rear plus a pivot/steerable dolly is required
A rear escort is required anytime overhang is in excess of 10’
What are the legal dimensions in Kentucky?
Width is 8’ on non-designated highways..
Width is 8’6” on Interstates, Parkways and designated highways.
Length is 65’ overall (truck, trailer & load) on non-designated highways.
Max 53’ trailer or load with no more than a 5’ overhang on Interstate, parkways and designated highways.
Height 13’6”
Weight 80,000 lbs

What is the maximum overhang allowed?
1/3 of the trailer length rounded down to the nearest foot.
The overhang can not exceed 35’ total.
A rear escort is required anytime overhang is in excess of 10’
What are the holiday restrictions for Kentucky?
Kentucky does not have any restrictions for Holiday’s unless otherwise noted on the permit.
What are the travel time restrictions for Kentucky?
All Overweight/Overdimensional moves, except mobile homes, can travel 24 hours a day 7 days a week unless otherwise noted on the permit. Mobile homes movements are restricted to Monday thru Saturday daylight hours only and no travel permitted Sunday.
What counties have time travel restrictions?
No travel permitted for any Overweight /Overdimensional loads in Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Fayette, and Jefferson or at Owensboro KY 2155 bridge (between KY & IN) from 7 – 9 am or 4 -6 pm, Monday thru Friday.
Can a single trip permit be amended?
No. The only exception is if the Permit Section makes an error in issuing the permit, that error can be corrected upon request.
If I violate my Single Trip permit what will happen?
The permit will be confiscated by enforcement and be sent back to the Permit Section, at that time it will become Null/Void. The carrier will then have to reorder a new Single Trip permit & may be subject to penalties from Enforcement.
Can a Single Trip permit be faxed?
Yes. Unlike the Annual permit the Single Trip permit does not have to be the original.
